Uncommon Personal Agency

Hello Sweetness,

We’ve been talking a LOT about choices. Brian Moran has been showing up a lot in my life lately thanks to his 12 Week Year… more on that another time. He also wrote Uncommon Accountability, which offers an insane reframe.

Kids get grumpy when I tell them to clean their room because it takes away their personal agency.

Brian’s framework: “Here are your choices and their consequences. Which one do you want to take?”

He’s more management-focused, but pre-teens are the slackiest of employees.

This approach is calm, open, and allows discussion about what’s happening for them and why their room looks like it’s inhabited by a village of trash pandas.

New goal: Emphasize the power and importance of personal choice in every interaction.
